15 Items I Add to My Bag When Traveling

Each adventure lends itself to a slightly different packing list, which is why I’ve always been hesitant to create a “master” packing list for all of my journeys. There are several things, however, that I find myself packing over and over again, no matter how short or long the trip. (Aside from essentials, like clothing and a toothbrush!) Remember, this list works well for me, but may not be what you need, so consider this list more as recommendations for what to pack for your next trip!

I spotted this little Matador Pocket Blanket at REI and instantly fell in love. This blanket fits in the palm of my hand. How cool is that!? These little blankets are perfect for impromptu picnics, a day at the beach, or to place beside your chair at the campground.

2. Mini toiletries.

You probably have a few of these already, but I love traveling with mini toiletries. They take up less space and some bottles can be refillable. I haven’t successfully ventured into the world of non-brand specific bottles, but I’m hoping to do so soon, to minimize how many pointy edges I have on my travel bottles.

3. Packing cubes (or diy “cubes”).

Packing cubes. These seem to be the hot thing in travel accessories at the moment and for good reason -- they keep your stuff organized in your suitcase! They really shine when you hop between a few different locations in one trip, like I did in Ireland. No more digging that sweater out of the bottom of your luggage.

“DIY cubes.” The last couple of times I have purchased sets of bed sheets from Target, they’ve come in these peculiar fabric cubes. I wanted to reuse these, so I tried them as packing cube alternatives. Love that I can reuse these weird things for something useful! (They also work really well for holding shoes.)

I used to think I was fine flying and driving long distances with just average socks, but then a friend of mine recommended compression socks. I found these Physix Gear Compression socks and they truly changed my level of comfort while traveling. It’s been a long time since my legs have felt stiff after a flight or long drive.

5. Ear plugs.

Good for planes, trains, automobiles, or sleeping through the night on a busy street. After all, don't you want to hear a babbling brook in your 70s?

6. Earbuds/headphones.

Good for listening to music, movies, or, erm, Google Maps when you’re totally turned around and don’t want to look too conspicuous. (I keep these and my earplugs together in a little pouch, so that I can easily retrieve them during flights.)

7. Camera, lenses, batteries, and charger.

8. Mini first aid kit.

I picked up this kit a couple years ago while shopping at a local grocery store and brought it along with me occasionally on trips. This little kit, however, gave me some essential temporary relief when I sprained my ankle in Ireland. (Hooray mini cloth wrap!) The supplies in my kit are basic, but it has enough to help mediate basic emergencies. I never want to use this kit, but I’m prepared if I need it!

9. Advil.

Remember that sprained ankle? Yeah, really appreciated having those painkillers to help minimize the pain.

10. Collapsible day pack.

It’s good to have some “comfort essentials” while traveling between point A and point B (think entertainment, deodorant, toiletries, etc.). You don’t want to drag these around when you finally make it to your destination, so you take them out of your bag and leave them at your accommodation while you go out and explore. Problem is, you’re left with an awkwardly large bag to maneuver. Bring a small collapsible daypack, like the one I have from Livingstone Bags to solve this issue. (P.S. I receive a small commission if you use this link.)

11. Pillow.

I’m a gal who likes to bring her own pillow. It’s bulky, but totally worth it. I have, however, downsized over the years to smaller pillows, as these fit much better in smaller suitcases. Take a wander through Joann Fabrics by the quilt batting and you’ll find pillows in all shapes and sizes. Then, if you’re feeling adventurous, make your own pillow case. Or, just use a full size pillow case and fold it over.

12. Portable charger.

Electronics die at the most inconvenient times, so it’s helpful to have a spare charger as backup. I typically don’t bring this along for shorter trips, but for longer trips, this is truly an essential thing to pack!

13. Snacks.

Food is important. ‘Nuf said.

The best part is that any space you take up at the beginning of the trip from snacks becomes room for souvenirs (like books!) Also, keep others’ food allergies in mind, especially if you’re going on a long road trip or sitting on a plane. Either eat those common allergy foods at another point in your trip or think of alternative snacks to bring along.

I discovered Wild Botanical’s peppermint chapstick a couple years ago and fell head over heels for it because it moisturizes my lips and helps alleviate any mild nausea I may have. Another plus is that the ingredient list is simple and natural!

15. Travel packs of Kleenex.

Warm, cold, dry, wet--climate fluctuations confuse my nose and I never seem to have a tissue when I need one, so I stash a couple packs of tissues in my purse.

There you have it! My 15 things I like to bring along on my trips. What do you like to bring along with you on your adventures?
